Phase 1 Air Quality Monitoring

The monitoring data on this page reflects performance standard monitoring collected during Phase 1 dredging. Phase 1 dredging occurred from May 15, 2009 to October 26, 2009 and the data was collected from May 2009 to December 2009. EPA issued performance standards for Phase 2 dredging based on the knowledge gained during Phase 1 and input from the peer review panel. Typical Operations: Daily total PCBs under 80% of the standard

Control Level: Daily total PCBs within 20% of the standard

Exceedance Level: Daily total PCBs exceed standard

Phase 1 Calendar (Please click on data for more information)

Phase 1 dredging occurred between May 15 - Oct 26, 2009. Performance standard monitoring data was collected daily between May-Dec 2009. Post-dredging (weekly) monitoring began on December 28, 2009.

Goal of the Phase 1 Standard

The goal of the performance standard is to minimize the effects on people’s health and the environment from air emissions during the cleanup. Since PCBs are the primary pollutant in the sediment, the performance standard sets the following limits for PCBs in the air:

How the Phase 1 Standard Works

  • Regular monitoring
  • Taking action to minimize air quality effects
  • Reporting and notification by the cleanup team to EPA
